Housing Starts &
Housing Permits

What are Housing Starts & Housing Permits when it comes to economic data?  And how do they foreshadow future economic conditions?

Housing Starts measure the number of new residential construction projects that have begun during the given period.

Housing Permits indicate the number of permits issued for future construction projects.

Together, these data points provide a snapshot of the current and future activity in the housing sector.

When housing starts are robust, it suggests optimism among builders about demand for new homes.  Conversely, a decline in starts can signal weakening demand, tighter financial conditions, or rising costs.

Housing permits, on the other hand, act as a forward looking indicator.  An increase in permits suggests confidence in future housing demand, while a decline might point to caution due to economic uncertainties, higher interest rates, or challenges like labor shortages or material costs.
